I wrote "computed". I did *NOT* write "computed at run time".
I had in mind things like
	typedef unsigned<(UCHAX_MAX+1)*2 + EXTRA> code_word_ty;

Since my original posting I have read another couple of hundred pages of
the C++ draft, and find that it _does_ have a portable way of determining
the properties. I can't make up my mind whether the way this is done
using templates is a really neat hack or an offence against decency and
order, but the facility _is_ there. Any way of speciying a type by listing
the properties you want still seems to be missing, and that is more
important. (Mind you, I still have about 500 pages of the C++ draft still
to read. It's amazing the stuff they have.)
