Faults with Shaw s example:
Such use of "gh" is found onlie after "u", as in "enough" or "laughter",
formerlie also after "r", as in "dwargh" and "bargh" (hill).
The word "woman"/"women" is anomalous, even in speech.
Such use of "ti" is alwais followd by a vouel, oftenest "o", but there
is also "militia".
If he had reallie studied the matter, he would hav found that
the biggest troublemaker is "s",
mouse/mice, rinse, cleanse, house (n), house (v), lesser, possess;
and after that "u"/"v":
glove, drove, tome, some, drive, give, live (v), alive.
This has nothing whatsoevver to doo with language-change,
but with Norman spelling rules.
