Question about making Static Libraries

I have made a rather large GUI for DOS and I want to encapsulate it in a static library.
However, I am having trouble. I don't know where to put the function prototypes, constant declarations,
and global variable declarations. I seem to need to have these things in the library code when I compile
it, but when I do this and try to link to this library I get multiply defined symbols. I think that I need to use
the 'extern' keyword somewhere. If you have any experience with this sort of thing I would appreciate
your help. Thanks in advance.
