C on vector machines

I followed the work of the Numerical C Extensions Group for a while,
but then moved into different areas. Now I need to move back again
(such is life in a university computing service!) Please can anyone
fill me in with a few pointers to the current state and/or activities
in this area?

My particular interest (now, as distinct from then) is in extensions
to C to allow efficient vectorisation on machines like the Cray YMP.
Please note that I am interested in the de jure and de facto standards
activities, and NOT in the fact that any particular vendor has a super
efficient compiler or a pet variant of C!

Thanks for any help.
