Hi Why is there a need for both ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) in the USA? I understand that ANSI is a private institution that does not actually develop standards, but that it verifies that standards have been developed properly, and that NIST is responsible for Federal standards in the USA, such as FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards). Is there not an overlap between the two? Are ANSI standards automatically accepted by NIST, and vice versa? This is probably a FAQ, but I have not seen reference to it here. As reception of news groups is not that reliable out here, I would appreciate it if you could email replies. If there is any interest, I will summarise and post.
