There's a good introduction to Plan 9 in this month's Unix Review magazine. Plan 9 is significant because it puts into question the whole client/server computing model used by Unix workstations today. The authors believe that general-purpose workstations do not make efficient use of resources. Like early Unix, Plan 9 takes a "backpacker" approach by rejecting things that aren't really necessary. It will be licensed to universities shortly. Another significant operating system nearly on the horizon is Microsoft's NT, which also supports Unicode.
