According to avg@rodan.UU.NET (Vadim Antonov): >>SMTP is bloated? I'll trade you SOML, SEND, SAML, and TURN for an >>eight-bit negotiation mechanism. We'll still slim it by a command or two. > >It already has features nobody uses (VRFY, EXPN, SOML, SAML, TURN) >and simply useless (HELO). Most implementations simply don't know >what to do with all that (i know because i had a pleasure of >implementing SMTP stuff). You've obviously never had to debug a mail connection remotely. I use VRFY and EXPN regularly. I'm willing to give up SOML, SEND, and SAML, but I think that TURN could become more useful, especially now that the Internet is so wide that it can take a minute or two to form the initial connection.
