Minitel Access from America?

Hi out there!

I have a few, (possibly naive) questions:
1.  Is it possible to access the Minitel system from the USA?
2.  If #1 = yes, does anyone out there know of backbones, etc., connecting
    the US with Minitel?

The reason I ask, is that the US and French mail is very slow.  I have friends
in France with computers; I have a computer, ergo, there must be an easier, 
faster, and less expensive way to send large amounts of info.
