I've found another source of international address formats.
It's a new book, "Merriam Webster Guide to International Business
Communications", Merriam-Webster, Springfield, Mass., 1994. This
was $21.95 at a standard bookstore, far less than the approx. $100
demanded for Marian Nelson's book "Guide to Worldwide Postal-Code
& Address Formats" (available from Marian Nelson, 35 W 90th Street,
New York, NY 10024, 212-580-4819) by sources such as Mailers.
The Merriam-Webster book also has information on telephone numbers,
forms of address, character-codes, faxes and other international
communications matters. There is a chapter on international customer
database design, and about 200 pages of country-specific information
from Argentina to Venezuela. This now appears to be the definitive book
on the subject. Of course this kind of information quickly becomes
obsolete.
Yours truly, Fritz Lehmann
