My company, Sierra Geophysics, is a member of the POSC
(Petrochemical Open Software Corporation), which defines a system
level standard that includes, among other standards, the POSIX.1
interface. To that end, we are currently searching for a test suite
that will allow us to judge the application compliance to the POSIX.1
system interface. I am aware that X/Open is currently phasing out its
application conformance program due to the lack of test technology to
insure application conformance to the XPG standard, so this raises
the question as to X/Open's future plans in the application branding
arena. Are there any test suites in existence that test for POSIX.1
conformance within an application? I am aware of several tools available
from SunSoft, SPARC International, and AT&T, which test for appplication
compliance to SVID3, but these would require a significant amount of
database modification to allow for POSIX.1 conformance testing. POSC
is in a similiar position to that of X/Open in that we do not wish to
mark an application as POSC compliant if it has not passed a suffient
test suite. I would greatly appeciate any information that you can
share with me regarding tools that you have evaluated or developed,
which might offer the functionality required for POSC to evaluate
application compliance to the POSIX.1 standard.

Thanks,

X/Open Terminates Application Branding Program

Hello again.

And I said then:

< Please note that this is not official X/Open policy. The subject
< will be discussed at the board meeting next week, and we will post
< news here to tell you about it as soon as we can.

Well, here is the official announcement:

"X/Open is terminating the Application Registration program.
Originally launched in January, '92, the program was intended
to address a user and ISV need to identify software which runs
on XPG branded platforms. Since that time, large users
including the X/Open user council have expressed a need for
automated test tools which verify conformance of software
products to X/Open's XPG specifications. This is becoming
increasingly important as heretofore proprietary systems are
XPG branded. Because the current Application Registration
program does nothing to verify application conformance to XPG,
the X/Open Board on October 21st decided to cancel the
   program."

But in case you didn't see my note last time, please don't confuse
the verification of APPLICATIONS with the verification of the
platforms, (or pieces of them) that SUPPORT applications.
X/Open's branding program for these has never been stronger or
more active: The XPG4 branding program was launched on October
22, with 67 new branded products available immediately: 65 XPG4
components, and 2 XPG4 Base Profiles!

Kind Regards,

Roy McKean.
