More often than not the experiences of the above problems are due to
people using refills of a non-Canon provenance, or not correctly following
the printer manual instructions re. powerdown etc.

In fact, the *only* problems of the above have been with refills!

Stick to what the manufacturer recommends, 9 times out of 10 there is a reason.

P.S. The Epson 500 is nowhere near as good as previous Epsoms on quality - 
a tragedy really - according to all reviews/experiences I have come across.
