Running Voyager at maximum speed

Does anyone have any tips for running Voyager at its maximum speed? The
scenario we're looking at here is when I tell Voyager to send/receive my
email and news. What I currently do is switch to Mode 0 (the modem runs on
interupts, right?) and increase the 'Next' slot up to maximum (dunno why. I
jus' do it :) Of course, I don't have any other programs multitasking
alongside it.

If your machine is a slow one but you are running at a high connection
rate. eg ARM2 with 33.6k Modem then changing screen mode may have an effect.
If you have a RISC PC with VRAM then this will make no difference.
Setting of the 'Next' slot is completely pointless AFAIK. As for Screen
mode and Modems running on interrupts, whats all this about? Interrupts are
not affected by choice of screen mode any more or less than any other code.
Programs running at the same time but just idling are also unlikely to
affect transfer rate.

:-) Mode 0 is dithered. Takes time to do that. Try MODE 1 instead. :-)

If you are feeling particularly masochistic, kill off some system modules
you don't need, remove Apps: and so on... Should be able to get your system
up to about 600 polls sec -1.

Maximum possible (with nearly everything unplugged) is 900 polls sec -1.
Dead-boot gives you about 550 polls sec -1 which quickly drops to around 120
polls sec -1 (as soon as it needs to keep paging stuff in and out).

Benchmark machine: 4Mb 25MHz A5000.

To be honest, I don't think you'll notice much more in the way of data
transfer. :-)

Don't touch the keyboard or the mouse, whilst the modem lights are
flickering on and off.

Wrap the monitor with silver cooking foil as this will shield it from
sun-spots which have been known to affect performance.

Remove all magnets and speakers from near the computer, as thiese will
simply slow down the data flow.

As a last resort, you could always try sitting on your head, to increase
the blood flow to the brain. What affect this will have on the transfer
speeds, i know not, but you never know!!

Arf...

I've found a good way of detecting these 'sun-spots':

1. Get a guitar amplifier with distortion (or a hi-fi will do).
2. Connect an audio lead (best is 6.3mm to 6.3mm jack mono) to it and turn
the amp on. If the jack has a metal sleeve, don't touch it
3. Wave the jack around by the monitor and hear the horrible sound from the
amp. That's your monitor, that is!
3. Wave the jack just over your Acorn. Hear the noise? That's your
   monitor, that is! Oh dear...

Try mode 114... <g>

600? I get around 8-900 polls per second, until I load FidoFail, when it
drops to 150-200. Something to do with the 640K wimpslot no doubt, as it's
paging that in and out all the time...

Haven't tried unplugging modules here, but I'm sure *Unplug ColourCard would
slow things down considerably... :-)

Same here...with ColourCard Gold and FPA10... <vbg>

The sp_dual has more effect, downloading from Arcade with the sp_dual I get
around 3-4000cps on archived data, 7-8000 on uncompressed text, and ~9000cps
on uncompressed sprite files, all with no retries.

Compare that to the internal port, which averaged about 2-3000cps if I was
lucky. That's not allowing for a 15% data loss, and retries etc.

Now switch off the ColourCard and try it with a little memory DMA!
