*****This information was received this morning from IBM, please share
it with anyone that might have access to the internet:
If anyone receives e-mail entitled "PENPAL GREETINGS!" please delete it
WITHOUT READING IT!! This is a warning for all internet users - there is
a dangerous virus propagating across the internet through an e-mail
message entitled "PENPAL GREETINGS!"
DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY MESSAGE ENTITLED "PENPAL GREETINGS!" !! This message
appears to be a friendly letter asking you if you are interested in a
penpal, but by the time you read the letter, it is too late. The
"trojan horse" virus will have already infected the boot sector of your hard
drive, destroying all the data present. It is a self-replicating virus, and
once the message is read, it will AUTOMATICALLY forward itself to anyone
whose e-mail address is present in YOUR mailbox! This virus will DESTROY
your hard drive, and holds the potential to DESTROY the hard drive of anyone
whose mail is in your inbox, and whose mail is in their inbox, and so on,
and so on...
If this virus keeps getting passed, it has the potential to do a great deal
of damage to computer networks worldwide!!!
Please, delete the message entitled "PENPAL GREETINGS!" AS SOON AS YOU SEE
IT! Pass this message along to all your friends and other readers of
newsgroups and mailing lists which you are on so that they are not hurt by
this dangerous virus!!!!
IMPORTANT!! It is essential that this problem be reconciled as soon as
possible. A few hours ago, someone opened an e-mail that had the subject
heading of "ao4free.com". Within seconds of opening it, a window appeared
and began to display all files that were being deleted. The user
immediately shut down the computer, but it was too late. This virus wiped
all out. It ate the Anti-Virus software that comes with the Windows '95
program along with the F-Prot AVS. Neither was able to detect it. Please
be careful and send this to as many people as you can, so maybe this new
virus can be eliminated.
______________________________________________________________________
I am sending this information along to everyone whose name I have
acquired in my addressbook. Please do the same, as these viruses have
deadly potential. I have heard that the "PENPAL GREETINGS!" virus
actually causes your read-write heads to touch the disk surface, by
stopping the flow of air that buffers the head above the disk surface.
I hope that this message gets around quickly enough to help out everyone
who has not already encountered these viruses, so please waste no time
in passing this letter along to everyone in your addressbook, and also
post it up in the newsgroups.

addendum
from iam (IAM_here)...
Please excuse if you already received this warning... I thought it was
important ejough to risk duplication, and hope you will forward to others.
(A Trojan Warning, with our help!)
ALSO...
If you are a little confused about the culprit in the mail with
Subject "aol4free.com" as opposed to the reference to mail with
Title Penpal Greetings!", well, so am I... (???) If anyone can shed light
on this, please inform, and I will pass on if pertinent.
Thank you for your patience. Forewarned is forearmed...

You have to remember that unless you're using MS Word to read your e-mail -
it is *impossible* to catch a virus by opening and reading the text. The
only possible way to get a virus through e-mail, is either as an attached
program which you would have to be stupid enough to open, or as a "word
macro" - which only gets executed in MS Word.

At last a sensible word. I might add that who ever is sending and resending this warning is actually the virus. It is YOU that is replicating the message and it is YOU that it spoilling bandwidth on the Internet and thus making it slower. Please, no more warnings, OK?
