Problems with computer - modem connection.

I recently acquired a 14k4 Suprafax modem, but I can't get it to
work. The problems seems to be the modem-computer connection; a plain
AT command doesn't give any response back, it doesn't even echo,
although echo is supposed to be on (entering AT E1 or whatever the
command was, doesn't help).

When turned on, the modem lights SD, RD and TR are on. I tried two
different cables, an ordinary PC cable with a 25/9 converter, and one
where (on the computer side) DCD is short-circuited to DTR. (I heard
the Archimedes can't read from it's RS-432 when DCD is low.)

Strange thing is, I also tried the thing on a PC, and the Modem Doctor
(a shareware program) can use and test it without problems, while
Procomm+ completely locks up!

If anybody can help me out, I would be very grateful,
