I had something similar with my Philips CM11342/20G monitor. Can't
describe it exactly as it was 4-5 years ago. I gave it the occasional
hefty bash which solved the problem for a little while. This suggested
a bad contact of some kind.

I opened up my monitor and found half a dozen cold solder points on
a small board close to the RGB socket. If necessary use a magnifying
glass. You will see a circular hair crack in the solder around the
wire end.

WARNING!! DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU
 ARE DOING.

The Voltages inside are in the order of 25,000 Volts and can linger
for a long time AFTER switching off. So rubber floormats and gloves
MAY save your life. Sorry for sounding paranoid but I am not.

30 seems a reasonable price to pay to an Acorn dealer for peace
 of mind.

I took a 'fine point' soldering iron to it and it has been OK ever
since, Uh .... except that the screen was now olive green instead of
light grey. Palette colours 3 and 4. [1]

The only way I have ever managed to change the screen colours was to
fiddle with Desktop_SetPalette in !Boot but not very satisfactory.

Then in May 98 I took my machine to an BBC/Acorn/Amstrad repair
specialist in Enfield to replace the Monitor on/off button. I had
been wedging it for the last two years with a small screwdriver.

When I collected the machine a couple of hours later, the screen
was its original grey colour. He said there was noyhing wrong with
my soldering but the colour guns on the Tube needed adjusting. Too
much green. Now, even if I had known, I would not have dared to get
close to it. He confirmed the voltages inside were around 25,000 V.

[1] I must have touched the gun adjustment controls by accident
when I opened it a few years ago.

The picture is now beautifully crisp. I had forgotten how it was
supposed to look like.
* Build a system that can be used by fools and only a fool will want to use it.
