I have an old A420/1 fitted with 36MHz Arm3, 8Mb RAM and all four podule
slots filled (including a Watford IDE I/F).
It is also fitted with a fan quitener the sensors of which are attached to
the PSU and the HD (now an ex RPC 420Mb job). The fan never gets above
idling speed unless you block the vents for about 15 minutes which I did
just to check it worked.

I therefore think the only way in which the fan may be marginal is whether
it is needed at all!

What may be of more interest is that I still have the Rodime 107Mb IDE HD
from the A420/1 languishing in a drawer somewhere, care to make me an offer?

As to using the external connector on the IDE card, never tried it, just
keep the cable short.

If the fan noise drives you mad, as it did me, I can strongly recommend the
fan quietener from ICS.
