Aren't they standard? About eight to ten centimetres 12 volt? Can't remember
the size, but I've shuffled fans around different supplies and they all seem
to be the same size.

Two possibilities:
1. It is out of balance. Seems to be a very finickity problem. My A5000
started up sounding like a lawn mower with blown exhaust. I jammed a
pencil into the fan, counted to ten and pulled the pencil out. Started
up fine then. Maybe it gets "bad fan days"? :-)
When you perform step #2, remember to wipe off all the crud with a
moist J-cloth.
2. It could need an oiling. Below the sticker is a circlip. You'll want to
fit two washers (preferably brass) and add a drop of sewing machine
oil.
3. If the noise is vibration in the casing of the computer (seems to be
a common gripe with the A5000), then you could do what I have done. Get
some bits of that thin foamy insulating tape and line the edge of the
fan before fitting it.
Note - it is not electical tape, it is that stuff you stick along doors
and windows to insulate against draughts (and chess...). :-)

Give it a good clean, it should behave like a new one.
Do computers have filters in them any more? There is a terrific amount of
grot inside mine (budgiedruff) that means every so often I have to totally
dismantle the machine and clean it out with an earthed paintbrush.
