Hi, Has anyone any experience of using ISDN2 Terminal Adapters on RiscPC. I want a model capable of handling 128k using 2 * 64k when necessary. It must also have 2 analogue ports minimum. I want to use it with Socketeer and SlipDial as the diallers. Any help or suggestions welcome. The Pace unit looks to be suitable but I would prefer it if anyone has had experience of using them. I've got the MagicXpess one from Argonet - works fine. Doesn't appear to have
any analogue ports or do you mean connections for phones. This one has one
connector and a splitter for phone use. I've heard of a school that used the
Pace one - no reported problems.

I am currently using a Pace UltraLink ISDN TA on my SA Risc PC with
great success. As my ISP is Demon, I can only use one channel at present,
but that might change... ;-) Strangely, I had a problem connecting
to Demon for a while (only one call in 5, on average, connected
successfully), but when I changed my access number to the new 'Green'
ROMP, all the problems disappeared. There is a driver file in the
ANT suite for the Ultralink, but I have modified it to force
communication between the Risc PC and the TA to 115200 baud
(setting S114 to the value 115). The entire initialisation string
is therefore:
AT&O7 S114=115 S124=0 S95=255
in case you need help setting up SlipDial/Socketeer. If you wanted
to force 230400 baud (if you're able to bond the two ISDN channels),
set S114 to 230 instead of 115.
One idiosyncrasy: when my software sends the ATD command to the
TA, it almost always responds immediately with a 'NO DIAL TONE'
error, so I have set my software to redial every second: the
second ATD always works! I can't see a way of making the TA
wait a little longer for the dial tone before trying to dial.
Good luck!

Me.

The Pace kit only has one... there are pace models with two, but
we found that they didn't generate enough ring current to ring even
an attached faxmodem. (It was there, I picked it up on my 'scope,
but it was very weak.) We went through three guarantee replacements
before discoviering that they were just plain badly designed.

Yes.
Buy a ZyXEL Omni.net TA. They're wonderful. Cambridge ISDN sell them.
I've used these on my RiscPC, and they just... work!

They are badly made and have a very poor reliability record in my
experience. They even *feel* cheap and tacky, whereas the ZyXEL kit
is more solid.
The firmware in the Pace devices has a number of bugs too- beware.

Okay, I just ordered it. What's your address just in case it doesn't work ;-)
Thanks to everyone that replied.

I use a ZyXEL Omni TA128 for two years now, and I am totally
satisfied. Not a single problem.

No problem with the ZyXEL. It also features two serial ports, so you can
use one TA with two computers (like I do with my RPC and my PC).

No problem, as it behaves excatly like a modem.

Buy it ;-)

I know nothing about Pace, other than that they are not available on the
German market.
So long, Steffen
