Problem installing 1GB drive

I purchased a Western Digital Caviar 21000 1GB drive some time ago. I have
recently installed it (having finally purchased RISCOS 3.7) and found I get
the following error when attempting to use the drive:

        Disc error 02 at :5/0000000000000006

If I reformat the drive using !Hform I am able to use it without problems,
but once I restart the computer the same error reappears.

Can anyone help?

Well, I am using the same drive on an A5000, and over the past year I've
had this happen once.

WD Caviar drives are notoriously 'difficult' to use on Acorns (and PCs
for that matter). They tend to forget their 'shape' and the FS can't
find them.

Mine works fine _virtually_ all of the time, but the last time this
discussion came up I think we decided that it was a combination
hardware/software problem. I use an ICS Wizzo IDEFS rom in the A5000,
and it seems that it uses a slightly different mechanism to Acorn's ADFS
in requesting the information from the drive. Certainly ADFS users have
commented that the drives are behaving in this manner.

There's a free utility somewhere out there which will aid making the
drive easier to finde without formatting. I can't find my copy (and I
can't remember who wrote it), but I'm certain somebody else out there
can point you in the right direction...

Cheers,

I may be wrong, but isn't there something about WD drives in the FAQ
(can't check now, my newsfeed is so dodgy ATM that I only got
part of the FAQ when it was last posted) ?

Kind regards,

The answer is in the FAQ, number 4 section 11.3 I reproduce it here with
apologies.

   REM> Specify
   drive%=4
   DIM rec% 64
   FOR I%=0 TO 60 STEP 4
   rec%!I%=0
   NEXT
   rec%?00= 9 : REM Sector size, 2^9 = 512
   rec%?01= 8 : REM Sectors per track
   rec%?02= 1 : REM Heads
rec%!16=4096 : REM Disc size in bytes
   rec%?41= 0 : REM LBA mode disabled
   SYS "ADFS_SectorDiscOp",,15+(rec%<<6),drive%<<29
   END
(Thanks to Eduard Pfarr for this program.)

There is, but I no longer collect the FAQ, thanks to NewsHound :-)

As somebody has already posted the short BASIC program, I think this
one's been covered...
