Point 1 - the Americans, British and Japanese (and probably others too)
are historically used to using a particular symbol for there
currencies. No set of accounts, price list, financial
prospectus, business plan or any other document quoting pounds
sterling would ever use UKP in place of the Pound symbol,
because that is the symbol that represents our currency.
Lacking such a symbol yourself, you probably underestimate
the importance of this.
Point 2 - There seems little point in designing a symbol for a currency
if the users of that currency are not going to be able to use
the symbol. In other words, if you are going to have a symbol,
make it one that is readily available to people.
Point 3 - The European Currency appears to be called the Euro, not the ECU.
