Start-up Error Window

Help please.

I am having a start-up problem.

RiscPC with StrongArm

When switched on the computer starts up with the normal RiscOS logo,
followed by the basic desktop icons as below:
CD HD FD Apps RAM . . . . . . . . . . Display Acorn

This is immediately followed by an Error window stating:

An Application that loads a File of this type has not been
found by the Filer. Open a Directory Display containing
the required Application and try again.

Clicking cancel on this window lets the computer complete its loading
of Apps such as Printer, Clock, LongFiles, MemNow etc.

This problem occured when I tried to install an update to longfiles,
but reverting to the older longfiles has made no difference.

How can I find which Application has not been seen by the Filer,
or which file is causing the problem ?

So far I have tried to remove, in turn, every App and File from:
!Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk and Tasks

Thanks,

Harry

: Look inside your Boot system - particularly the Predesk directory - and
: look for a data file which has got put there by mistake. It could be a
: text file if it's happening before the text alias is set.

: Find it and remove it.

And if that doesn't work, look for a file called 'x' in the root directory of
the boot drive. There are others, too ('softload' for those with 3.8,
'repeat' on older machines without *repeat on ROM, a number of others I
can't recall ATM), and it's bloody irritating when it happens.

At a guess, it's something in ...Tasks which is causing the problem;

I suspect it's not so much a file or app in ...Tasks, but rather a
line in ...Tasks.!Boot (Shift-double-click into !Edit to read it):

You want to look for a line starting "Run..." or "Filer_Run..."
followed by a dubious-looking filename: by which I mean a data file,
not an application-beginning-with-pling.

The other place to look is inside the directory Utilities; boot
sequences have a tendency to Filer_Boot /everything/ inside that
directory.

I have a simliar prob along the same lines. However my randon start up
message reads - ERROR NOTHING TO DELETE - This does not arise everytime and
I cannot relate it too anything specific or anything that I was doing before
shut down. Any ideas.

OK - I've just tried to cause this and I've a couple of ideas:

1) There is a rogue file in Tasks somewhere - but you've already removed
those so...

2) In !Boot.Choices.Boot is a file called 'Desktop' (which I think is the
file John meant). Load it into your favourite Text Proggie and look for
any files which begin Filer_Run or more likely with simply a filename.
eg. 'ADFS::HardDrive4.$.Temp.Crud' Try commenting this/these out - DONT
DELETE them! (to comment just add a '|' - left hand Shift plus the button
on the right of it) at the beginning of the line.
Hope that helps,

Rey

Never seen that one! 8o() Soundz more like a problem with an application
than your boot sequence.
What Applications do you run on boot up?
Which version of RISC OS do you use?

I had the same problem here and tied it down to !TempDir the latest version
every time I put the latest version in to the Boot.Tasks this error would
come, so took that version out and put back v1.12.

I have now tryed it three times with the latest version then after two or
three days the error will show it self and to say the least I have whent
back to the old version now I do not get the error.

Best Regards, Mick
