!Powertec - a waning

On Feb 15th I placed an order with a supplier for two power-tec SCSI cards.

After a lot of chasing and excuses they eventually arrived on June 5th after
##_15 weeks_##.

I hate software protection. Which should have nothing to do with the power-tec
card which is hardware.

However when you load the installation program the rst thing it does is beep at
you and complain that it has not been installed. At this point you are trying to
to RTFM and nd out how to install it.

So the software beeps at you again, rudely, after about 20 seconds. The software
wont let you read the manual - it keeps insisting it hasnt been installed by
beepin every 20 seconds.

After getting thoroughly beeped at, you eventually nd the installation bit and
have to write in a user name etc: fairly normal protection for software - but
this is a **hardware SCSI card**.

We bought two cards. The software is on a 1.6mB disk and the second puter is a
440/1 which only reads 800k discs. So I copied my installation program onto
another disc.

My colleague (who has the second puter at another location) has just phoned to
say that he cant use the software as it as registered to me.

This is unforgivable in software. When the software has one of the largest
dongles possible attached (the SCSI card) it is downright stupid and
obstructionist. I bought SCSI cards, not software. The software is incidental to
the hardware.

I am emailing a copy of this to Allsystems for their reply but I wish I had
bought a competitors product. You are all warned.

Are you sure?

The message the powertec gave after inserting in a computer was during
boot-up was a little line telling that there is a 16/32-bit SCSI-card into
the system. After that it envokes it filing systems and further reboot the
computer. It never asked for a name or whatever. Except the SCSI-manager
program which indeed asks for a name and organisation during first-time
installation.

I've had an issue 1 and now an issue 2 card (firmware 1 May 1996).

It could be that Alsystems changed it's firmware to check for a name or
so...

I guess you best check out at Alsystems.

ISTR that the "excuses" you mentioned included those little CE regulations
that everyone seems to be getting so worked up about...

Oh right. So you can have the hardware all by itself then. A load of use it
will be

Ummm. With firmware flash rom, I expect.

And thus broke the law by copying copyrighted software.

So make a copy of the original disks which he should have put in his
machine if it had had a HD disk. Since this one won't have been registered
to you, it should be fine.

Crap. The software is one of the most important parts.

We? Oh I'm shaking in my boots, oh no, you might not buy my product
because it's copy-protected.

Basically, your entire post was complaining that you are too stupid to read
the manual and don't actually understand anything at all about computers.

I suggest you blame your education instead of Alsystems, who (from
what you have said) have done no worse than any other supplier.

Hello

After readung most of the articles in this thread I am feeling
urged to express my opinion:

IMHO:
I am using my powertec for approx half a year now.
There were a few problems but they were nearly solved during
this time by software upgrades. I found Gary Partis very helpful.

The originator of this thread is dissatisfied about a few things.
If the installation routine gives an error every 20 secs, then
Alsystems should take a serious look at it.
Everyone, who installes software from unprotected original discs,
is a fool. First write protect your discs, then make a copy. You
won't break any copyright here, because it is allowed to make
backup copies.

I don't even think that he breaks it, if he transfers the files
from a 1.6Meg to a 800k disc for his friend, who has bought the same
controller.

There was a lot of discussion about copy-protecting such a piece of
software. The controller does not run w/o the software, but the software
won't run with any other controller. Copy protection is of little use here.
Everyone, who can use the software has bought the controller and therefore
the software. There is only one thing left: Alsystems charges for upgrades.
If I copy the actual software from a new controller, I will break
copyright rules.

At the beginning the upgrades were availiable via Internet and I was
deeply disappointed after this vanished. Customer Support is a high
rated factor in my buying decisions. So maybe today, the decision
will change for a Cumana II or Connect 32. On the other hand, I am
thinking of asking Alsystems for an exchange 1.01 <-> 2.00.

IMHO end.

Bye
   Thomas
