How do I rescue the contents of a crashed hard drive?

Hi folks,

One of mu SCSI hard drives crashed this after noon, taking with it some
vitally important data.

When I click on the drive icon, I get the message Disc not understood -
has it been formatted?

I downloaded disk commander earlier this afternoon, and had a play with
that, and whilst I've managed to rescue a dozen or so files, there's a few
thousand on the disc, as amongs other things it contains my copy, plus a
working copy, of my web site.

Disc Commander seems to be telling me that it can access all of the disc,
but for some strange reason every sector is sector 0, there's only 1 head

DiscKnight 1.10 tells me that it cannot repair the disc, and gives the
following info when I run a check on the disk :

DiscKnight 1.10 (19-Nov-2000) Serial no. 21300302

Boot Block - Defect List
  CRC is OK
* Sector size invalid (0)
* Sectors per track invalid (0)
* Number of Heads invalid (0)
* Bytes per map bit (LFAU) invalid (0)
* DiscKnight cannot handle discs smaller than 1MB (0 )
  Boot Block CRC is OK

---------------------------------------------
DiscKnight is unable to fix these problems
---------------------------------------------

It is (Was!) an E+ format disc - long file names etc, running on a
powertec SCSI 3 card.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to how I can rescue my data.

HELP!

Many thanks,

Dave

This means that the boot block has been corrupted. DiscKnight can cope with
this if you know the parameters it was formatted with. You can find these out
using the !PowerMgr information display for the drive. Click on the advanced
options button, and enter the tracks / heads / sectors per track values into
the fields, and DiscKnight will then search for the map and rebuild the
bootblock.
