It took about 30 minutes, but I has taken the precaution of saving all
the files in !Newsdir ( apart from the articles :-( ). Most of this time
was spent rebuilding the entire index.

When I checked, there were no paths pointing to the floppy disc, but
I'll try installing 0.54 again, on a copy of the new database, and see
what happens.

The article loss was a side effect of Newbase not preserving group
expiry times.
