My reading of RFC822 says that both UT and GMT are officially recognised.
Note that it specifies 'UT' and not 'UTC'. Is there a later RFC which
rescinds this?

Anyway, according to RFC822 the *preferred* method is the +/-HHMM one. It's
completely unambiguous.

On the other hand RFC1036 (the usenet one) suggests that times be
transmitted in GMT and displayed in the local time. It also says that the
+/-HHMM thingy should be supported. There is no mention of UTC or UT at all
except by reference to RFC822.
