You are wrong: the ftp server on homepages.demon.co.uk *is* fully
compliant with the relevant RFCs and hence implements the RNFR and RNTO
subcommands. OTOH, whether you can *use* rename (or for that matter, the
DELE command) depends upon whether your *client* program knows how to
tell the server that it wants to execute these commands.

I've no experience whatsoever of FreeFTP; what sort of interface has it
(command-line, or gooey)? If command-line, and it *doesn't* have a Delet
or Rename command, does it work like the FTP client in KA9Q (i.e.
anything that the client doesn't recognize is passed on verbatim to the
server)? Alternatively, does it implement the QUOTE command to pass on
an instruction to the server?

If either of these techniques is possible, then you can use the raw FTP
protocol commands to tell the sserver to delete or rename.
