Join the club! I've got a cheapo modem, and exactly the same thing happens.
You're fortunate in that having a "brand" modem, you can phone Demon helpdesk
(0181 3711010) and tell them your problem, and they'll send you an AT command
that should help.

I did the same, then gave me a script, but it doesnt' work :-(

FWIW, I don't even get to "HELLO". It goes "ATDT08453535666" and it stops
there.
