(Apologies for the slightly off-topic disa post, but I know that this certainly used to be a very helpful group!) Hi there, I am trying to set up my father's RiscPC to work with Freeserve. It has been working with Demon for 3 years without problem, but I'm buggered if I can work out how to get it to use Freeserve. I used to be quite happy fiddling around inside the workings of Freenet configuration files etc etc by hand, but a year away from the Arc left me diving for the apparently simple all-in-one Acornet. Downloaded AcornetA but it didn't like the system, came up with a multitude of not found files. So downloaded AcornetF v0.22. That worked fine, and installed without [too much] problem. But now when I dial up, it dials fine, and then does nothing. The call is answered, but that's it. Right-clicking on SLIPdial shows no communication between the two computers. I seem to remember noticing something about PPP connection somewhere WRT Freeserve. Certainly on my PC (sorry!) the DUP connection is a PPP one. I've certainly not been presented with a PPP/SLIP choice when setting up Acornet, although the archive did come with an installer for a Shareware PPP driver. So, is this PPP/SLIP problem the correct thing to be puzzling over, or am I wasting my time looking at that? If PPP is the problem, how do I get it to work with Acornet? Cheers, Robin Moffatt

I think you might need to use PPP rather than SLIP although I am by no means
an expert.
I have freeserve working fine here using a RPC. I am just using Acorn's
internet stack (as included with new !Boots I think) with Socketeer to dial.
Once you've got that going you can pick mail/news fetchers and a web browser
(ie POPstar, Newshound and then Browse/Fresco/WebsterXL/whatever)
So unless you want to use Acornet for some other reason I suggest you give
Acorn !Internet/Socketeer a try. I think details can be found here
http://www.richie.ukgateway.net/internet/internet.html
or I can send details of my setup on request.
HTH.

I use PPP/PAP with socketeer with acorn internet module with no problems. a
few months back they changed their setup so that going straight into pap
negotiation rather than a login script was better (the other usually failed
or took a very long time to logon. files need setting up for pap secrets in
inetsetup IIRC Freeserve.help.acorn is a good newsgroup for this info if
no one pipes up here.
