I remember hearing at one time that a program was being produced called
NBRemote which acted as an online newsreader, allowing access to
newsgroups without downloading the articles to read offline. Could
someone please tell me if this actually exists and, if so, where to get
a copy?

Is this different from using www.dejanews.com browse groups facility in
your web browser? If you do this, you don't have to download, and you
can have all the threading information you want.

But perhaps I'm misunderstanding your needs.

It's like what I'm doing at the moment. I'm connected, using Marcel, to
my news server directly via NNTP. Articles only exist on my machine
whilst I am reading them and consequently don't consume vast chunks of
disc space.

It's really rather quite nice to get used to, but is probably not much
use to anyone who has to pay for dial in. Since I have a direct network
connection I have no such troubles (I live on campus at my uni).

Advantages:
+ You use a real news reader rather than the dejanews one.
+ You use a local news server which should be fast rather than
having to wait ages for dejanews to respond to each request.
+ Probably stretching here, but less memory is used, both primary
    and secondary.

Disadvantages:
  - Have to be connected to the net.
    Not always a disadvantage.
  - umm..

RemoteNB is reputedly available from tom@compton.demon.co.uk.
