Well, my contract with Argo has finally finished, and as it hasn't been
re-newed you wont be be seeing me here for long time, if at all.

Y'see, now that the Acorn Workstation division has finally popped its cogs,
it's time to move to the PC game programming world.

This is because I don't feel that there will be any new Acorn computers, and
if they are then it would be the result of a long and draw-out affair, just
like the Amiga's was. Besides, how long can Acorn last anyway now ?

Cheerio.

As a strong advocate for the Acorn platform in my dept and school I now find
myself fighting a losing battle to the advances of windows. All too often,
despite my best efforts to sell the best of RISCOS, the parental body who
are mostly in the business sector are understanding but want to see their
children using windoze machines. The latest blow has been the donation of a
substantial amount of cash with a strong proviso that no funds must be spent
on Acorn equipment. My hands are tied. Sorry Acorn but I fear your days
are numbered.

Buy just one single machine. Tell them that the rest of the money has
been reserved for support costs.

Macs are 'not Acorn equipment' and are nearly as nice to use as Acorns, apart
from the single button mouse!

If the school has non-RiscPC Acorns. Then buying any modern computer is
going to leave the Acorn looking dated. The fact 310's are not as dated
as the PS2 is one your school is only going to find out with time.

However I can't see buying Mac's is really going to help. Get a set
of cheap PC's but concentrate on hardware first.

A good A3 printer, quality scanner, audio input, Eye-Balls, network
cards and software, big hard-drives, just one 17-inch monitor maybe
even 19-inch for demonstration.

If at all possible make the purchases direct. Check out the cheap
PC stuff, www.memax.co.uk , www.aria.co.uk getting the most of the
money. If your lucky they'll be some money to harmonise the
computer platforms with software. EasiWriter Pro for it's reading
and writing of MS Word documents. And in fact a bucket load of
freeware bit's and bobs.

The argument for Acorn's has always been that they teach cross-skills
better that PC's. Putting it into action before they leave school seems
a logical step. The day a pupil actually saves off they're work, walks
over to different computer running a similar application to the one
they were just using. Just because it's got a feature they now need.
Is the day you actually produced one that has a proper education in
the *use* of computers.

The one thing about macs is their wondowful error messages. Only a mac can
come up with the likes of: 'Please insert disk 'Harddisk'', or 'Cannot
delete file because a file of that name already exists' (When it clearly
doesn't, not even in the bin) and I have had a few other little gems I
can't remember right now. At least windoze just admits to having no
idea what has gone wrong (not to mention eject buttons on the floppy disc
drive!).

Having said that, MacOS itself, when it is actually working, isn't /that/
bad. And the one button mouse doesn't really upset the user, though I
suspect it makes designing the programs a little harder for the
programmer. I keep trying to press the right side of the mouse button on
the macs in uni, and the one huge button doesn't seem to mind. Sometimes
it even does what I expected! It does crash lots though.

What about tellimg them you are going to buy some PCs that are called NCs
and run windows AND the Acorn desktop using Metaframe and TopCat.
You can say that you are running PCs but have the advantage of running all
the software you have built up!!

Where do we find these, and will they run on any PC?

Metaframe - http://www.citrix.com/
(IIRC: expensive licensing, ideally needs a powerful server)

TopCat - http://www.microlynx.co.uk/
(not strictly PC software, more RISC OS software stored on a PC server)
