Has everyone heard the news that Escom are planning to sell Amiga
Technologies to Viscorp? (Check out AT`s home page for more info.).

Doesn`t look good.

Is it? There's a rather strong emphasis about "controlling the
techonology" for use in set-top boxes. And *no* mention of a PowerAmiga
imminent, either. Just the A1200 and A4000T were mentioned in an
almost-aside. But *do* check it out ... http://www.amiga.de, under press
releases.

Just wonder what "doesn't look good" about it. Right now AT is owned by
a company who'se survival depends on selling PC clones, and that's where
they'll put their money first. VIScorp has said they want to base their
products on the Amiga, as well as continue currently planned development
on the platform, while still supplying the current line of machines to
the market. I'd rather have a company whose betting their survival on
the Amiga running it than one who primarily bought the product to see if
they can expand their current market. Besides, from the sound of it,
ESCOM and VIScorp will still be working together, and people at AT will
still be working there.

That's not my take on it. If Viscorp continues to operate Amiga Tech as
a computer company, producing and developing Amigas, everything is fine,
with the added bonus that AT isn't owned by a company that begrudges their
existance.

This has got to be better than doing the Escom Loss Report Watch.

Isn`t it fairly obvious? ;)

Viscorp are based in the US. Softwood should have less problem getting through
to them for developer kits etc. Plus, there may be a chance that Viscorp
A1200`s come bundled with Final Writer Lite, some cheap Spreadsheet/database
packages, and maybe a paint program. No wonder Digita don`t like it! ;)

No, thats not why I said it doesn`t look good, I was talking about the
Amiga in general. Everyone is assuming that Viscorp is buying AT to
continue developing and making Amiga computers, but I wonder if they
don`t just want the chipset and OS for their settop boxes, which they
already used under licence.

If I read it right, it looks like AT will be allowed (encouraged?) to carry
on as if nothing had happened, it's just the name of the boss that has
changed. The upside is that now Viscorp has a stake in ensuring continued
development, whereas ESCOM really didn't.

The possible downside is that Viscorp may decide that they don't want to
continue making Amigas as stand-alone computing platforms, and may _only_
make set-top boxes with them. Good for games people, not so good for
professional aps people.

Wow, come to work, and the world is upside-down again. :)

I remember when Commodore was sold to ESCOM and everybody figured
that all ESCOM wanted was the trademark and that the Amiga was headed
right down the tubes. But that didn't happen. Amiga production was
restarted and Amiga development went ahead. But I said at the time
that if somebody was going to pay GOOD MONEY for Commodore, then they
weren't about flush it down the drain.

Now AT has been sold FOR EVEN MORE MONEY to Visicorp (a company
FULL of Amiga bigots--if you haven't heard). These guys aren't
spending $40 million just for the privilege of flushing Amy down
the toilet either.

Stay cool.

Well, that question should be an easy read for all of us? VisCorp already
has the license for the chipset and Os to use in set top boxes.

If they have what they need already, why buy the whole bundle if they are
NOT interested in doing more? Remember too, that there are some of the old
Amiga guru's working at VisCorp!

Why wouldn't it be good? It proves that the Amiga Technology is worth
something.

WW> Looks pretty darn good to us!

Why does it look good to you? Doesn't it prove that the Amiga
technology is not viable?

Sorry to put it this way, but please explain why you feel either way.
Maybe Woody has some insight that make him optimist.

Two reasons off the top of my head:
1. They believe owning the technology is cheaper than licensing it.
2. They can keep the technology out of the hands of competitors.

The real question is what they intend to do with the technology once
they own it , and whether those plans include the personal computer market,
a market quite distinct from the set top box market.

You said yourself the exact reason why people are NOT panicking.

They already HAVE the license to do set top work. They want MORE control
over the technology, to pursue more avenues of implementation, including
more licensing and the Amiga Technologies computer arm.

Well, the first thing that Viscorp will want to do, IMHO, is to look into cost
reducing AGA and putting it onto one chip, perhaps with some sort of AGA+ mode
where everything runs faster. This will make their primary objective of set-top
boxes cheaper and more compact.

Next, I would start to assume that they would assess current developments,
Walker and PPC in particular, on their own merit (and % of completion). I would
think Walker has a very good chance of survival as it seems to be virtually
complete and PPC would logically make a Viscorp box as powerful as the Pippin
and superconsoles flying around at the moment, not to mention stave off any
threat from the Matsushita M2 (in terms of being close in technology, anyway).

Future devlopment is obviously in the air and would depend strongly on the
sales of Walker and the initial PPC machines/upgrades as it should be.

This to me sounds like a good thing for the Amiga, somebody atlast has
realises that the Amiga is worth some real money, you don`t imho spend
40 million buying a company that a. the previous owner bought for 10
million(I think) and b. tha has a few bits of technologhy that would be
useful for a set top box and you already have a license for unless you
have some pretty big intentions for the bits that you have not got a
license for, in this case the Amiga computer.

Also the odds are that the Amiga may still appear in Escom shops as they
are one of its present distribution channels. (read the announcement
athttp://www.cucug.org/at/at960411.html)

I`m looking forward to what comes next. :-)

Any chance there might be some more Scala stuff now too?

Scala is a natural match, given that Scala is also populated with
Amiga people, and it's a leading software architecture for interactive
set top boxes. Though that's true regardless of VIScorp's computer
intentions for the Amiga.

What if this is a 'stock transfer' and NOT a sale for cash? Change any
minds? We don't know the details yet ...

Or you want to protect the initial investment and aren't sure what a
new owner might do in the way of licensing?

What if VisCorp doesn't buy any of the inventory that is in the
pipeline? That may be Escom's ONLY way to get rid of what they have on
the floor ...
