Hi there,

Can anyone help with an annoying problem I have?

I'm using a /registered/ version of MUI 3.8. I have set it up to use
certail fonts, and for each application I use that needs it (iBrowse, MD-II
etc) I have set their MUI defaults to blank.

I beleive this means they should use the main defaults?

They don't! They keep resetting to use the horrible (IMHO) helvetica/9 or
11. I hate that!

How can I keep the fonts I've chosen to go through /all/ my MUI
applications?

Any advice gratefully received, whilst I still have some hair ;-)

System as below.

Yes, it should.

Yes, for some stupid reason quite a few MUI applications that I have
do that very same thing.

As far as I know, you cannot very easily do it. One program, Voyager,
I know for a fact specifically loads the helvetica fonts when you
click on the "Images" section in the General Preferences. For some
reason it wants to force use that font. I've quadruple checked my
MUI global font settings and the MUI font settings for Voyager
specifically. I have no reference of helvetica anywhere in either
config of settings. Yet, SnoopDOS still reports Voyager trying to
open that font.

> Any advice gratefully received, whilst I still have some hair ;-)

The first thing that I tried is totally deleting the helvetica font
from my hard drive. For the most part, this worked with all of my
MUI applications *EXCEPT* Voyager. When an MUI app would look for
the helvetica font (for whatever reason, I have all of my MUI apps
set *not* to use it) and can't find it, the app defaults to load
something else. Voyager on the other hand simply either refused to
work, or the "Images" section of the General Preferences would not
show up. Funny thing about that is the other sections *will* show
up.

Well, since that didn't work, I did the next best thing. This is
what I recommend you do. Pick a font that you would like to
replace helvetica every time that it's used. Then go to your
Fonts directory in your SYS: partition and delete the "helvetica.font"
file. Then copy the main font file of the font you chose into the
place of the helvetica font file. I chose the "xen" font and here's
what I did in a CLI window:

cd sys:fonts
delete helvetica.font
copy xen.font helvetica.font

This way every time one of your MUI programs accesses the helvetica
font, it loads the alternate font of your choice.

It works perfectly for me, hopefully it will for you as well.

Set everything in Mui itself, then set all the program mui's to
default or if no such option, delete all individual settings. Then
Global prefs and IE. MDII prefs will be the same. If your fonts are
too big, however, they can bugger your applications. I had this
happen with YAM 2.0. So be careful. In theory, MUI global settings
work on all programs, except where you specify something different in
the Mui settings of a given program. To get YAM and MDII to look
right, all I had to set was Textview and Textedito to normal modern/e
and fixed to topaz/8. In YAM I left all the rest blank--same with MUI
itself for global settings. Dispite what I said above, you may have
to set each program's MUI settings to get them to look the way you
want. MUI is strange.

what monitor you use?

I asking you this, because of the same MUI behaviour on my old (monitor)
PAL or NTSC. Now, when I got the multisync monitor those troubles are
gone:)))

I have always had a CTX model AD-1970 multisync monitor.

The problems existed on my multisync, so I don't think my choice of
monitor is/was the problem.

Actually, the problem is the screensize. This is influenced by your choice of
monitor, but other than that the type of monitor has nothing to do with it.

Yeah...you are right, but the thing what I ment to say is if you have a
multisync good monitor, those MUI fonts must be ok on high resolution.
What mode are you using? Does fonts (helvetica 9) look ok on your
monitor?

I switch back and forth between SUPER72 800x600 and Multiscan:Productivity
640x480, depending on the mood I'm in and how sore my eyes are from work.

I don't like the helvetica font. I think it looks awful no matter
what monitor or resolution I'm displaying it in. That's why I chose
to "fool" Voyager by deleting the "helvetica.font" file and copying the
"xen.font" file into its place.

MUI bug stil remains:(((...but like I told before, when you use a DblPAL
or Mulitiscan fonts on the screen
look just fine.
