All, I am sorry, but I can no longer sit quietly and not speak out about the so-called strategies of PIOS to provide the Amiga community with the next generation of AmigaOS compatible computers. It has been suggested that PIOS needs to sell MAC clones in order to pay bills and continue research on Amiga development. This has to be one of the most illogical business strategies since C= attempted to further Amiga development with the sale of PC Clones! As a rule, people do not jump from one platform to another willy-nilly. There are many costs to pay when moving to a new platform including the replacement of software and the re-learning of a new OS. For every single MAC clone that PIOS sells, they are literaly removing one potential buyer from the customer base for TRUE "next generation" Amigas. It is sheer folly to market a product that is/will be in direct competition with a product that you "really" want to market. Why doesn't PIOS re-sell other products to "pay the bills"? There is enough new tecnology being developed and marketed every day that PIOS could choose to promote. Technology that would not be in conflict with future Amiga sales. Technology like Digital Video, Digital Storage, and Digital Communication. They could re-sell laptops, palmtops, ISDN modems or anything that wouldn't possibly interfere with the sale of future Amiga home computers. From what I can tell, either PIOS is very naive about marketing, or they are simply employing the same strategy that BE is using of engratiating themselves with existing Amiga end-users in order to get their business. In any case I'm not buying it! Regards, Martin

I would assume the decision was based on something like "Who'd going to buy the beer? Can't, out of cash. Drag. Well, ok, we need money, how can we get some? Could sell PCs. Nah, everybody sells PCs and nobody makes much from them. Hey, Macs are being cloned now! Cool, that is where the amiga should go, let's check it out. Hey, if we sell some of these now we can make some beer money until VIScorp gets off it's ass. Let's do it. What kind of beer you want? Anything over 7% alcohol. Cool, let'd get pie-eyed." :) : For every single MAC clone that PIOS sells, they are literaly removing : one potential buyer from the customer base for TRUE "next generation" Amigas. If the only market VIScorp will ever have is existing amiga owners they will drop quicker than ESCOM did. : It is sheer folly to market a product that is/will be in direct competition : with a product that you "really" want to market. Why should their bank accounts be driven by the whining of the owners of 5 year+ old computers? They don't own the amiga rights after all, even if you accept the supposition that whoever does should take care of people who have never given them a dime in purchasing what they sell. : Technology that would not be in conflict with future Amiga sales. : Technology like Digital Video, Digital Storage, and Digital Communication. : They could re-sell laptops, palmtops, ISDN modems or anything that : wouldn't possibly interfere with the sale of future Amiga home computers. Possibly because they don't have income coming in from their various oil fields in Saudi Arabia and can't take on more than a few projects at a time. : From what I can tell, either PIOS is very naive about marketing, or they are : simply employing the same strategy that BE is using of engratiating themselves : with existing Amiga end-users in order to get their business. The baseline of all this is that you think the only people who will buy new amiga computers will be existing owners and that the market consists only of them. I think that if this is true then the amiga is dead already. : In any case I'm not buying it! Noone is forcing you to. Regards, BM

Only potentially removing one of their Amiga clone customers, and potentially gaining other customers. And while they're at it gaining experience in actually operating as a company, making the kit, support, etc... > > If the only market VIScorp will ever have is existing amiga owners they will > drop quicker than ESCOM did. But we're talking about PIOS not Viscorp. Viscorp plans are for low end set-top boxes to sell to people who want that machine. -- <URL:http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/1666> Team AMIGA The United States also has its native Fascists who say that they are "100 percent American"... - U.
