Netscape on SS?

Okay, I'd thought I'd ask this (stupid question perhaps) but what do I need
to get Netscape (or any other Internetsoftware for that matter) up and running
on Shapeshifter 3.4 (unregistered). I'd assume that I need the Mac equivalent
of ppp.device and the extension MacTCP. Is there anything else I would need
and where can I find it (www.apple.com perhaps?)

Gezzz, UnRegistered Shapeshifter, Devicefiles are REALLY REALLY Slow. Makes
the Mac Really SLOW, which makes everything else running on it SSLLLOOWW!!!
But hey if you want to give it a try, just make sure your in B&W mode that'll
help a little.

Anyway all you need it MacTCP which comes with System 7.5+, and Slip or PPP
software, there's InterSlip for SLIP, and MacPPP for PPP. Both are FREE and
you can find them at many locations. Your ISP probley has it on there system
in the Mac Area. I looked at InterSlip, what a PAIN. Looked at MacPPP
Simple! If you can do PPP then use MacPPP, there are other PPP programs like
FreePPP, which I tryed first, but had nothen but problems untel I turned off
ALL of the Extentions. MacPPP works quite well.

Then get a copy of Netscape or whatever. The nice thing is when everything is
setup right, You loadup Netscape, and if you NOT already connected to the
Internet, when you select a Locations to go to, It'll Automtially Startup
MacPPP, Dial out to the ISP, Log it and Connect right up, off you go Surfing
the Web. I'm using the Newest Netscape on System 7.5.1 and I have forgoten
the last time my system has Crashed running it.

It's not all that hard, Much simpler then Amiga Stuff.

You should check to see if your Internet provider has preconfigured software
available for you. Sometimes it's on an ftp site that the provider has and
after you download it, you just have to enter personal stuff, like your
name and e- mail address.
My provider has Mac and Windows software available like that, not Amiga stuff.

First advice: REGISTER! It makes the Mac emulation way faster, you can use
color (and a Mac in B&W is truly a very Sad Mac) and it encourages
Christian to keep improving SShifter (hopefully MMU support soon.. :^)
Then get a BIG drive, at least a 500 MB for all the Mac software you'll
likely be downloading soon...
BTW: be warned that Netscape 2.x doesn't work in B&W! The last version
that did was 1.2, still at some FTP sites...

Now that's sad but true... :^(

You might want to tell my 3000 that the latest Netscape won't run in
black and white....I'm running it right now. The only time I switch to
color is if I go Web surfing.

The NEWEST Netscape DOES work in B&W mode! Well I know the 2.0 Beta's were
working for Sure in B&W mode, I think when my brother was over and complaning
about the Speed of Shapeshifter in 16 color mode(He has a PowerMAC) He
rebooted in B&W mode and used Shpaeshifter in that as it a whole lot faster
that way. The only bad part being it can be quite hard to read the screen
with background pictures! I'll try again later to make sure, but I'm pretty
sure it does. You also Don't need to be registered to have color support!
I'm a registered user myself though, I have one of the lower numbers. Have
been a registered user for quite some time now. Well worth the $40US that I
payed. As for 500 Megs of HD space. RIght now I only have a 80 Meg
partitions and thats more then enough for me. I run only a few things right
now. Netscape being one of them, along with RealAudio which if anyone didn't
know there's versions to support at least the 030's/040's SO Did mac's ever
have 060's? probley works also. I've used RealAudio 2.0 on my 030/50Mzh
processor a few times now.

Not true, works fine in 16 colors B/W, I am using it right now (Netscape Atlas,
and Netscape 2.01)
