I've used Imagine4.0 and Lightwave4.0 and I have to opt for Lightwave for the best 3D animation package. Imagine's cryptic user interface alone is something to make you run to LW. I like Lightwave approach to modeling no to mention the new plug-ins and layout is setup like a soundstage: lighting, camera, "actors" objects. plus the fact you can rotoscope recorded video, or other animations. and bones, and inverse kinetics plus again the plug-ins, like the new cybergraphics plug-in. I guess in the long run for price to performance and high-quality animations, Lightwave 3D is a very powerful program, so if you have to choose which one, IMHO it's Lightwave.
