And the machine's motherboard is still only running at 33Mhz. > Not to rain on your parade or anything, but the 486SLC66/2 is made by IBM not Cyrix and is compatible with everything I have tried which includes a machine full of relatively exotic cards, Windows, OS/2, Linux, 386bsd, etc. This isn't too surprising since it is based on an Intel 486 core without the floating point, rather than being independently derived like the Cyrix chip. I got the 486DX speed figure from the PC Tools/PC Tools for Windows benchmarks and from timing heavy cpu real world tasks (like jpeg viewers) which I compared vis a vis my Gen-u-ine Intel 486DX/50. I'm glad you find it so amusing. While the IBM Alaris 486SLC66/2 motherboard may be limited in some ways it is a VESA MB. In fact, I've got a 1280+/VLB video card in there right now. Your point about the 16 bit bus is well taken as that is why the chip runs at DX40 speeds rather than DX66/2, it is also why it costs $300 instead of $600, but then again almost 2/3s the performance for 1/2 the cost ain't bad. It is true that the motherboard runs at 33Mhz, but what exactly is your point? The motherboard for a 486DX66/2 runs at 33Mhz as well and it is still faster than my 486DX50 for which the motherboard runs at 50Mhz. Oh, a true 66Mhz version might be faster than the 66/2 but it would also break VESA cards left and right and make it much harder to design a motherboard that works with it. For the piddly gain in performance I'll stay with 33Mhz motherboards thank you. Despite all your ranting and raving 486SLC66/2 motherboards eat 386SXs for lunch, I also own a 386SX20 notebook and there is no comparison. I apologize for posting all this IBM crap to an Amiga group (I also own an A3000) but I don't like the dissemination of misinformation no matter where it occurs. Unlike some people I generally don't spout off on things that I know nothing about. David Albrecht
