  Jeff, avoid the Western Digital's Caviar line.  Its IDE interface ise very
different from the 'standard'.  Some others may as well (I've heard of a few
Quantums having problems with makeshift cords) but I've used a 3.5" Quantum,
2.5" Maxtor, 3.5" Connor, and 3.5" WDCaviar and the WDCaviar was the only one
with any problems.
  Where the fault lies is really with the IDE standard, because it's a very
loose one.  Much more so than SCSI, which rarely has compatabily problems.
(though I will not say never, because I've seen it happen!)
