Why does genlock foul up PAL?

I have an A3000/030/25MHz NTSC machine (also displays PAL screens of course). When I tried attaching an AmiGen genlock, it fouled up PAL mode (when I tried running a PAL program or PAL IFF (i.e. 320x256)). I got rid of the AmiGen, and now have an IV-24 (also has a genlock). Once again my PAL mode is screwed up, so that the rows appear double-spaced and flicker. The screen is once again fine when I change back to NTSC. What would be causing this, and how can I fix it? The genlock doesn't support PAL modes. I don't think there is a fix for
this one. That's why Euro-users aren't Toaster-users. Some hardware
just isn't international :(

You can't. This is the intended function of a genlock - to 'lock' the
frequency to the external video source. Since you have an NTSC genlock, it
locks you into NTSC video modes. The only genlocks that I am aware of that
can be disabled when you don't want to use it are the GVP G-Lock and the
latest model from Play. Otherwise, as long as the genlock is attached, it
locks you into NTSC screen modes.
