I keep finding files called only ".info" in oldish archives. What are/were they for? Adam Atkinson - ghira@mistral.co.uk / etlaman@etlxdmx.ericsson.se If I were a fuzzy-wuzzy bear, 3 would be a perfect square. If I were a bumble bee, Z would be a UFD.

: Adam Atkinson - ghira@mistral.co.uk / etlaman@etlxdmx.ericsson.se poses this question to the masses: : I keep finding files called only ".info" in oldish archives. What are/were : they for? they hold the names of the directory, files, projects, tools ... that have .info files. (the answer to the next Q: 'what are .info files', that's sure to come up) the icons, those pritty/ugly (however u see it) pictures of directories, files, disks, projects, tools, ..... thus the <filename>.info or <dirname>.info, and of course disk.info (the icon of your disk) there U B. ME!

The .info files hold the icon's snapshotted (sp?) position within a window.

They were used to store a list of files with icons in a directory for use
by Workbench when you opened the drawer. They went out with V2 and higher
and you may delete them.

Workbench uses these files to determine where the window for that particular
drawer's going to be opened.

Most of my drawers don't contain a ".info". I think it was only used by prior to 2.0, the 2.04 UpdateWB script
specifically deleted the .info files from the sys: directories

Right. The drawer data is stored in drawer.info. The .info files
kept the list of icon names so that workbench doesn't have to
scan the directory for #?.info files when it opens a drawer. The
.info file is timestamped, when it gets out of date compared to
the modification date of the directory then it is ignored and
then recreated after the directory scan if the disk was writeable.

Dunno about the update script, but yes, the .info files aren't used
anymore since WB2.0. Directory scanning speed is much faster in 2.0
and the need for .info files is gone.

If there isn't a .info file in the directory you probably have never done a "snapshot" of that dir. The icons positions, window size, & position a stored in the .info file not the drawer icon. -- Email: wizard@galstar.com WWW: http://www.galstar.com/~wizard Member <TEAM AMIGA> -- A bachelor is a man who hasn't made the same mistake once

No, they're not used anymore. They were considered obsolete when WB 2 was
released.

Buy yourself a contemporary OS. :-) 3.1 would be a good suggestion. -- Henrik Dissing E-mail: hendis@aix1.danadata.dk Tranbjerg, Denmark FidoNet: 2:238/24.6
