Hi there ! My System: A500(OCS), 0.5 Chip, 2.5MB Fast, MultiEvolution3.0 SCSI Controller, Quantum Fireball 1080, WB2.1 I have heard that HD >1GB are making problems with OS2.0. But ... I formatted it and have only one partition (maybe a mistake !). Until a certain level I had no problems, but when the HD was full about 42% a problem occured: I have big problems with the Workbench. It is possible to open one or two drwaers, but soon as I trie to open another drawer or start a program, the computer crashes, no GURU, nothing, simple all the programs stop running, after about 5 sec even the mousearrow won't move anymore, Just as if a program was taking all the CPU-load. I have already looked for viruses, found none with my antivirusprogs. I have started the Amiga with no programs running, disabled the WBStartup-drawer, typed LOADWB, but I got the same result. I have got no problems with CLI, anything else (GUIs,CLI,Programs started from CLI etc.) works fine. Is there a connection between the HD and this ? Do you have any other ideas ? Please e-mail, thanks Andre

Hi, Andre, This information is the best that I can come up with. Because of that, it may not be 100% correct. Please feel free to keep asking around. My system: A500 (ECS), 1MB CHIP, 4MBs FAST, A-530 (68030/40, 120MBs Maxtor), 1GB Conner FAST/WIDE SCSI and 3.1. > But ... I formatted it and have only one partition (maybe a mistake !). I think so and here's my opinion why. First off, the Bit-map of a partition that size takes up a lot of memory. The more you put on the drive the more it becomes. Second reason, for example, is a partition that size would be difficult for a program like ReOrg (Disk optimizer) to work. It needs memory to work and with one large space like that, it wouldn't be able with the amount of memory you have. > Until a certain level I had no problems, but when the HD was full about > 42% a problem occured: > I have big problems with the Workbench. Each was 300 MBs and the last about 110 MBs. In my example, I found with the memory that I have (1 CHIP and 4 FAST) that gave me just enough to still use ReOrg. On the other hand you have 2.5 MBs, so your mileage may vary. Since you didn't mention it, I would check to see if you are running out of memory by watch the top of your WorkBench screen for what is available. You might fine that you have 26K CHIP left by the time you get all the drawers open (depending on size of the Icons and amount of Icons) and than you're trying to start a 200K application or open another drawer when you don't have enough memory. Since the applications works from CLI, then you are saving memory by not opening the WorkBench disk/drawers. One point I should make here; If you use DiskSalv2 (not sure about the newer version) at anytime, it has weird problems at times. Could eat the partition it is working on. Not having everything in the same partition saves time when restoring and you only restore the lost partition, not the hole drive. This helps, because you may not of done a backup recently and you only lose files that where in the lost partition, not all over the hole drive. Second point I should make; If you don't have a direct need to have one large space available, a good arguement for partitions is to backup other partitions or to restore from. Assuming that you don't backup some other way. Last point that I should make; I have nowhere near that amount of stuff in my Conner 1 GB HD, so I could be way off base here.
