cross-platform compression?
#2170

Is there a file compression/decompression tool that can be used
across platforms? For instance, I might want to compress source
code on a UNIX machine or PC and uncompress it on an Amiga, or
vice-versa.

If there is such a tool, where can (source code for) it be found?

Thanks in advance for any information.

.zip, .lhz/.lha, .tar.gz All available for Unix, Amiga and PC. I use
all three on my Amiga and shell account. Look in util/arc on Aminet.

Amiga Mudders, Merc22-Envy20-Rom24 have been ported to the Amiga.

GZIP fits the bill. It is distributed under the GNU Public License, as far
as I know, and many people have already ported it to Amiga, MS-DOS, UNIX, and
many others.

Zip and Unzip work across all platforms. Source is available from

ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/comp.sources.misc/volume31/zip19/ (for zip)
ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/comp.sources.misc/volume44/unzip/ (for unzip)

I think they come in several parts, SHAR format (i.e. you need the unix
Bourne shell to extract them.

The LHA archiver also exists on unix, PC, and Amiga. So does Zoo.

Do you or anyone know where I can find a LHA-(un)archiver for PC
that handles lh5?
