850Mb IDE hd's on A1200 Help req

Hi,

The company I work for has over 100 remote InfoChannel playstations with
the following specs:
   - Amiga 1200 computer
   - Segate 850Mb IDE HD
   - 65W SwitchMode PSW

Unfortunately, we have in excess of 10% failure within 90 days, and all
but one of the failures is due to data corruption on the hard disk, be it
the usual read/write error, or courrupted data in the files.

Is anyone else either having this problem, or have they fixed it? We've
tried AFS, but that didn't help. As a last resort, we're building the
next lot of playstations with SCSI disks.

HHEELLPPPP!!!

You dont mention the physical size of the HDD but if it is a 3.5inch
drive you may need to do one or maybe both of the following:

Upgrade the power supply to the Golliath as the Brick really is not up
to the job of long term usage.

Because of the space restrictions inside a 1200 the HDD runs very hot,
a panel mount fan secured to the top of the 1200 should keep it cool.

I know of several people here in Ireland who have lost a hard disk for
the above reasons. particularly large 3.5inch drives. I modified
surplus pc power supplies to power their machines result no more
problems. But the fan would still be usefull !!!

Hope this is of some help. let me know of any developments.

Try lowering the MaxTransfer rate inside HDToolbox. This is a common cause
of corrupted data. (Select "Partition Drive", then "Advanced options",
then "Change" to find the value.)

My 1200 setup includes 2 512 meg HDs and a 2" minifan mounted under the grill.
It's running off a modified IBM-XT 150W PSU.
It's been up and running with ZERO problems for almost 2 years, 8-16 hours a day.
This would not be the case if I had stuck with the standard 1200 PSU.

I would still have to think that read/write errors and corrupted data are
caused by a software problem. If the HD starts getting unrepairable
bad-blocks, then it might be hardware related.
