What is likely your problem is the serial port driver that you are
using. Don't expect too much speed from C='s serial.device. Get
8n1.device or baudbandit.device and used that instead (both are
on Aminet). They can handle much higher speeds.

What makes it so easy to tell that the driver is the problems is
that you only have problems when receiving data. Even C='s
driver can send data fast.
