Hello Blitter (Dave)

I typed the following some time ago for a person on the net which also had
trouble starting AmiTCP etc. I hope you can use it to set up AmiTCP on a local
basis.

BTW: This "guide" is meant for AmiTCP-demo-40.lha which you can find on Aminet
in comm/tcp

---------------------------------------------------------------------

-CHAPTER 3 AmiTCP
After unpacking the .lha-file start the "Install_AmiTCP" programm. The program
uses the Commodore/AmiTech-installer which is included, so you should
experience no trouble at this time. I guess the easiest way is install it is
by doing a step-by-step work.
 - Set Installation Mode -Expert User
 - Installation Options -Install for Real
-Log File (in case there occurs an error you
can send me the log file)
 - Select directory... -Choose the directory where to install AmiTCP,
the installer will *not* create a direcory,
so I created one called "AmiTCP"
                                 Selected Drawer= "Work:Connect/AmiTCP"
 - Shows Licence -Read it :-)
 - Update Sana-II network... -Yes, if you use one of the following device
                                 drivers:A2060/A2065/rhslip/rhcslip.
Since I assume you use a connection via
                                 ppp.device: No
 - install Napsaterm fonts -If you want to use Napsaterm: Yes
 - use settings former instal. -No
 - default user name -your user name (must be the same as in login
                                 name)
 - login name -your login-name (must be the same as in user
                                 name)
 - user ID -use recommended value (100)
 - primary group ID -same as above (100)
 - real name -your full name
 - home directory -for this purpose I created a directory called
"Work:Connect/Home" which I also use as my
                                 download directory.
 - name of command interpreter -use recommended (shell)
 - Are you sure you want... -Add loginname
 - After this procedure you will be asked for a password twice. Enter one at
your leisure if you don't want to be asked every time at bootup you can
   edit it later. (i.e. "Password")
 - network connection dynamic -Yes! Even if it isn't but only when
connecting through ppp (not slip!) because
handling will be done automatically by
                                 ppp.device!
 - domain name -Domain name (Chapter 2)
 - network interface type -PPP
 - network interface -ppp
 - default IP address -0.0.0.0 (will be changed later)
 - destination addres -1.1.1.1 (will be changed later)
 - netmask of the network -Netmask (Chapter 2) or leave empty
 - default gateway -should be 1.1.1.1 (same as destination
                                 address)
 - name server(s) -IP-Address of DNS (Chapter 2)
DNS are some sort of phonebook. You send the
DNS a symbolic address and it returns to you
                                 the IP-address
                                 (i.e. ftp.wustl.edu - 128.252.135.4)
If you have entered all the DNS-addresses
                                 then enter an empty string.
 - domain names to search -normally this should be the domain name of
                                 your internet provider
 - change s:user-startup -Yes,Proceed
 - Inetd started at AmiTCP/IP.. -If you want your machine to react on events
                                 from outside (e.g. AmiTalk): Yes
After this you get two files to read one is the "README.FIRST" the other one
seems to be missing or there is an error in the install script. Anyhow you now
have installed AmiTCP on your machine and should reboot. After this open a
shell and enter "startnet". The following should appear:
login: yourloginname
Password:
Now enter your selected password and a window should appear saying this is the
demo version of AmiTCP 4.0. The "OK" button is ghosted for some seconds. Press
it and a window named "AmiTCP/IP Log" appears. There should be a message:

...[info ]: iface_find(ppp0): no such interface in AmiTCP:db/interfaces

In the shell window there should be something like:
ifconfig: ioctl (SIOCGIFFLAGS): no such interface
add net 0.0.0.0: gateway localhost
add net default: gateway 1.1.1.1: Object exists
If there appears an other error please contact me with the logfile.
Otherwise enter "ping localhost" in your shell. You can stop this programm by
entering ^C. The following output should read like:

PING localhost (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
  64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=1 ms
  64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=1 ms
  64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=1 ms

  --- localhost ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0% packet loss
  round-trip min/avg/max = 1/1/1 ms

Your output may differ a little bit according after how many lines you stopped
the programm. Important thing is the "0% packet loss", if so you have
successfully installed AmiTCP on a local basis. But since we want to connect
with the outer world we have to continue to the next chapter.

BTW: If you want to get rid of the annoying password question when starting
AmiTCP you have to edit "AmiTCP:db/passwd". Your entry should be the
last one. Delete everything between the first and the second "|" so that this
line reads:
  yourloginname||100|100|yourrealname|yourhomedirectory|yourinterpreter

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you'll get it all right. If you still have troubles then send me an
email.
