Okay.  I got really pissed at this and have just gone through umpteen 
reboots.  And, I found the problem!!!!!

On my system it was .... ta daaa .... sleeping pointers cute.  Started 
from WBStartup (no problem if run from workbench afterwords - go 
figure).  So, the presumption is, if anyone else wants to test, that 
(some, most, any) anim pointers - started from WBStartup - will cause the 
problem.  

p.s. I'm getting waaay too old for this ... zzzzzzzz.  Past my bedtime!!
