I have the latest registered version (from the author's Web page)
of the PPP driver. I see on average about 25% increase in speed
over the unregistered version. This of course depends on what
I'm doing. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less. I would
recommend that you register it though. It's only $15 and
the keyfile enables PAP and a couple of other things. Plus
the bug fixes come into play with the newest versions of it, too.

I should ignore these posts, but who are these people anyways?

What do you mean "Is it really worth upgrading to registration?"

IS $15.00 too much to ask for even if you only use the program ONCE A DECADE?
regardless of any "speed increase". Let's see - what would that cost someone
- oh, maybe a new "Alice in Chains" CD, or .75 months of Internet connection,
or a movie ticket and popcorn, three hours working at min. wage.
Jeesh, what an attitude.

What if people like Holger decides that he has had enough of you "cheap charlies"
and goes away?

If only to ease your conscience, $15 shouldn't be too much. PPP is a good
piece of work and the author deserves to be rewarded. The attitude suggested
by the above comment is why we see so much crippleware. If you like it and
use it, I think you should pay for it.

>How much percentage is the speed increase?

Your mileage will vary. It really depends on your link. It was good for me by
about 30%.

Registered versions allow lots of things to be tweeked, like the
fixed MTU=572 you have now can be taken up to 1500. That alone will
crank the speed up on an otherwise good circuit by 20% or more,
depends on the servers response time from ack to next packet
outputed. I don't imagine that $15 US would cause a market crash in
your area now, would it? <G>

As far as I can tell, gugu wrote to Alle about 'ppp registration vs. non-registration', my reply would then be...

>Is it really worth upgrading to registration?

IMNSHO it is!

>How much percentage is the speed increase?

I got an increase from approx. 2200 cps on ftp to approx. 2800 cps.

Ofcourse it is!
It's not a question of *if* to registrate...
If you use it, you *should* registrate!
Mr. Kruse have spend a lot of time doing it. I think $15 isn't so hard to raise.

And yes, it is a speed difference.. How much in procent I can't tell.. Guess it depends on what kind
of files transfers you do.

Let's say it in this words:

Ftping from my provider with 24000 bps (can't go higher because my modem
doesn't like my provider ones).

ppp.device (unregistered) about 2200 cps
ppp.device (registered) about 2700 cps

Of course it all depends on how much traffic there is on the net, but I think
you got the picture.

Hmm, so that might translate into unbelieveably fast transfer rates
for my 28.8 (which already gets 3000-3200 cps during ftp file
transfers), once my keyfile arrives in a week or so. (Just sent off
the registration yesterday)

On or about 07-Mar-96 09:24:23 Gene Heskett typed the following words about
"Re: ppp registration vs. non-registration". My reply is thus...

 Hi Gene,

I agree with you about registration, I am a registered owner of ppp.device. It
is *MUCH* faster than the unregistered version.

GH> Registered versions allow lots of things to be tweeked, like the
GH> fixed MTU=572 you have now can be taken up to 1500. That alone will

However, the above statement is incorrect. The following is a quote from the
docs about MTU.

"In the evaluation version of ppp.device this option is not functional and the
MTU value is fixed at 1500."

I agree - I was getting up around 2900 cps (was ~2200 before)...Great

Of course its worth it. Not only does the registered version have a lot
more features, but the author obvious has put a lot of work into it and
deserves to be rewarded for it. The cost is small.

At _least_ $15 worth.

And I must mention the .keyfile will allow you to use updates as they are available.
