Ethernet and Amiga

The dorms I live offer a 10baseT ethernet connection in certain rooms. I'm
considering living there again next semester, and I am being offered my
choice of room. I'm wondering, is it worthwhile for me, an Amiga user, to
get a room with Ethernet, i.e.:

Is it possible to hook an Amiga to a standard 10baseT ethernet
connection? I just talked to the fellow in charge of the network and he
said, no, it's just for macs and PC's... but I've heard stories of Amiga
ethernet cards and of amigas being connected to PC networks..

Is it feasible for me to do? I sure would like to have a 10mb/s
connection (or however fast it is, better than 14.4 I'm sure) running into
my Amiga. Has anyone else done this? IF so, what are the costs involved?

I could justify dropping like $300 for an ethernet card for my amiga
better than I could justify dropping $500 for like an old 486..

(I have an Amiga 1200 mx1230a/50/50 4Fast)

Yes. You can do so without any problems. You'll need to appropriate
software (AmiTCP) and the driver to talk to the Ethernet card.

Its the price of the Ethernet card (new prices I've seen at ~$250, used
prices - you'll need to check comp.sys.amiga.marketplace) plus the cost
of AmiTCP. AmiTCP demo can be gotten off of Aminet...

Don't know about an Ethernet card for the A1200. Haven't seen any adds for
one. The only one's that I'm aware of are for the A[234]000 machines with
Zorro II slots.

The I-Card from Interworks is available for the A1200.

Some folks do have some problems with AmiTCP though. <sigh> I-Net 225
works just fine with it.

There is also an Ethernet card for the A1200 based on PCMCIA but I do not
remember its name or price or anything else ...
Just know that I saw it at the Computer 95 in Cologne, Germany.

Perhaps anyone else knows more about it.

That fellow did tell you a lie, as always when PC/Mac people tell you
something about the Amiga's capabilities. Plain ignorance.

There is *one* (hacked) _pcmcia_ 10BaseT-card to choose from. ;-P
 [ I-Card from Interworks/California; $300 is last price I know of]

Have a look at http://www.his.se/ida/~a95hanne and choose the
"Worldwide..." link (can't remember the direct name right now).
There you will find a link to "Amiga net-hardware choices" (or something
similar).

I myself will be setting up a '386/SX33 with an Ether-card and serial
115.2Kbps linked to my Amiga, shortly.

A 386DX Fatherboard did have SX
 with my Motherboard. What will come of that? 8-}

yes you can do it on an a1200, you need something called an ICard
(comp.sys.amiga.reviews had a review on it a while ago), it's a PCMCIA
ethernet card.

You can happily run amitcp over ethernet, I myself have 2 amigas and 2 pc's
linked together via ethernet at home and it's brilliant being able to copy
files really quickly between them...

Go for it..

Having just spoken to Hydra systems they still sell the I-Card for the 1200,
which can get 3-400k/sec, the price is reasonable too at about 160UKP, they
also have a US distributer, Hydras phone number is +44 (0) 1203 47333.

The I-Card is available from Interworks. 909-699-8120,
email info@iworks.com for more information.

Divide this one by 2 to get the correct transfer-rates.

When copying from ram: to ram: between two A1200 (50MHz030s) with ICard
and a singler cable, 2 Ts and 2 terminators, we've had transfers up to
230-240k/sec. Remember this were under ideal situations.
In dayly use I hardly ever see anything higher than 140k/sec.
Besides this I've had lots of probs with ICard crashing my system :(

Does that IO Board for the Cyberstorm (with ethernet on it) still exist..
(did it ever exist)?
