To any holdouts, you gotta register PPP1_45! It
really IS 40-50% faster, like a new modem or
something!

  Krusing on a 14.4 V42bis :)

Oh, no kidding! I just got my registration disk the other day, and now I
wonder why I waited so long! With my lowly Cardinal 28.8, I can get ~4000cps
download times with AmFTP. I knew the registration was a real upgrade, but
never really understood how much.

   Peace,
   Kirk

How long did it take for you to get the thing registered? I sent a check
over a week ago and he still hasn't cleared it. I sent e-mail and also
received no response (two days ago) I REALLY want the registered version.
argh!.

I find it strange that people appreciate crippled shareware more than
uncrippled shareware...but maybe that's just me...

I wouldn't call it crippled when it's unregistered. Still entirely
useable. With a 28.8 modem, you get close to 80% throughput ... well
over 2000 bytes/second.

Unless I'm much mistaken, the registration provides you with
_additional_ features; like header compression which gives a bit
performance boost on small packets.

Meanwhile... I've still to register mine. :-)

When I registered PPP, it took a little over 2 weeks. I think that's
pretty good. I think expecting any registration to go through in a week
is wanting a bit much.

Holger has written the code for header compression. The unregistered version
doesn't use it. Holger has written code for PAP. The unregistered version
doesn't use it/in later versions it works for a few minutes.

It is crippled.

Only to you, I guess. Crippled to me means you can't use it. For
example, the DPaintV demo is severely crippled. You can't save or open
more than two different screen modes. On the other hand, you can use ppp.device for
the rest of your life, everyday and it will work (unless your ISP is cheezy
and requires PAP, then you're limited to 15 minutes at a time).

If there weren't any additional features to be gained, I would *not*
have registered it. Plain and simple. How many people have actually
registered LHA? It does everything that I've ever needed it to do, so I
haven't sent any money to Stefan. Sure, I *should* register lha, but it's
way down on the list. The promise of increased speed for everything I do on
the internet was an incredible incentive to register.

I'm going to register THOR someday, not to get rid of the requesters,
but because it's a nice package and I want to support it. For now, though,
I can live with them. If Asher Feldman is still around (anyone know?), $10
for a 10 times speed increase in UUxT is a great deal!

But, by your definition, that's crippled, too, so it's useless....
