I use PPP and it's dialer to dial my ISP. When I double click on an icon
that has the default tool set to Iconx it goes through the dial and,
usually, the window closes and it sits there, doing nothing, until it
times out. If I execute startnet from a cli then I usually get through
everything just fine. Anyone have any suggestions?

What icon? What script does it start?

Why not create an icon for startnet then? Or better yet, use a tool like
ToolManager or TinyMeter to launch it.
