I have a short and simple question.
Has anyone out there written a really fast serial.device, i.e. one that crams
maximum speed out of the serial hardware without caring about the rest of the
system? If the CPU serves the serial port and nothing else (well, almost) I
know it's possible to go very fast (say >100000 bps).
I'd like to use such a thing with DNet in 38400 bps. All Sun workstations with
OS 4.0 and up can easily handle 38400, but my Amiga 500 using the standard
serial.device can't because one interrupt/sec is generated when receiving and
this is too much for the 7 MHz 68000. (I've tried it... :-(
I realise that multitasking wouldn't work very well if you concentrate all
resources on the serial connection.
Would it be possible to write such a serial.device, boot with as little as
possible (no workbench, no applications running) and then just
let DNet do receive without even touching the mouse :-)?
All suggestions are welcome (but I *can't* afford to buy ethernet hardware!!)
Mike
